Amidst great festivities and a warm welcome from the people of El Obeid the first of many trees was planted; Sayga and its partners; Wali of North Kordofan, Minster of General Education, the Commissioner, NGOs and some representatives from the local community commemorated August 2nd as the 47th Tree Festival Day. The celebration was a ‘’first of its kind in 43 years’’ as quoted by the Commissioner and demonstrated a high level of stakeholder engagement and partnership. To resolve the problem of water shortage facing the city, Sayga also rehabilitated the city’s Central Nursery’s main water well which lead to an increase in productivity from 10,000-20,000 trees a year to an astounding 100,000!!! The initiative is also currently piloting the school forest project complete with awareness leaflets containing attractive illustrations for the students .

Sayga did not stop at planting trees however: the program also included an Income Generating Activity and Capacity Building Training for around 200 women in the city. In addition, and to ensure sustainability, Sayga extended its support for the Integrated Women Development Center by rehabilitating the center, provision of cooking facilities, ovens, a mixer, fridge, stove, utensils, etc. The program also advocated the usage of gas burners in traditional bakeries instead of firewood to promote environmentally friendly and safe practices.

Sayga’s commitment to the people is unwavering and constant monitoring and evaluation is being done to ensure the sustainability and success of the initiative and opportunities for future collaboration are always sought ... for a GREENER DAY!!!
